Runners start on the golf course at the Sani Pass Hotel and the first 800m is along the fairways before passing under the Sani Pass Road and entering the Gxalingenwa Trail. From there the course climbs steadily for the next 4km until the Gxalingenwa Trail intersects with the Giant’s Cup Trail at Ngenwa pool.
Once on the Giant’s Cup runners will climb for a further 2km until levelling out at the 6km point from which it is a couple of kilometres of flat running followed by the 4km descent down into Cobham Nature Reserve and the first checkpoint at 13km.
Leaving Cobham it is a sharpish climb for 2km until reaching an undulating section of approximately 5km before the 2km descent into Mzimkhulwana Hut and the second checkpoint at 22km.
From Mzimkhulwana it is a fair climb for the following 5km until you reach the high point (1969m/6460ft) of the day at Crane Tarn. It’s all downhill from Crane Tarn until until turning onto the new section of trail that links to the finish at Castleburn Farm on the banks of the Umzimkulu River.
Starting from the Finish of Day 1 at Castleburn Farm runners continue along a short section on the Drak Gardens road before re-joining the Giant’s Cup Trail and climbing sharply for the next 500m.
The trail then descends for the next 1.5km to Wintershoek Hut after which it climbs steeply up the slopes of Garden Castle with a vertical gain of 370m within 2km. After this intense effort there is a relatively flat piece lasting 6km before a steep descent and a further flat section to the checkpoint at 14.5km at Swiman Hut. This is the only checkpoint on Day 2.
From the checkpoint runners turn South and head towards Bushman’s Nek. There are some gentle climbs before a steep 1km descent down to the crossing point over the Mzimude River which appears at 21km. This is a good opportunity to replenish liquids before the final haul to Bushman’s Nek.
From the Mzimude there is quite a bit of climbing for the next 5km to the high point of Day 2 (2158m/7080ft) at the saddle in front of Langalibalele Peak after which it is a continuous descent before joining newly cut trail, with 2.5km to go, that takes you all the way to the finish at Bushman’s Nek Resort.
